Having successfully left behind her southern upbringing and all the baggage that goes along with it, Alex Houston has made a life for herself in Manhattan complete with a thriving career, a robust social network, and a new fiancé.

Unfortunately, a “miscommunication” left her soon-to-be husband thinking that her whole family is dead. Anticipating that her South Carolina-bred family will never accept her impending interracial marriage, Alex decides this false information is for the best. To make matters worse, while visiting her family for her sister Jeannie’s wedding, yet another communication gaff compounds the web of deception Alex has spun. This time, her witty, gay best friend Jonathan causes a stir at the wedding as a rumor spreads like wildfire through the reception that Alex is a lesbian.
