Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) People
Prism, Northern New York's GLBT Concerns Group, is a member organization for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people. It meets twice monthly to provide GLBT people with a place to meet, communicate, and promote self-identity and awareness. Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons, their families and friends through: support, to cope with an adverse society; education, to enlighten an ill-informed public; and advocacy, to end discrimination and secure equal civil rights. PFLAG provides an opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity. Northern New York Families is a group for LGBT parents and their children. The group meets once a month at a member's home. Meetings provide a time for parents to share experiences and support and for children to play with and get to know other children from LGBT families. To reach Northern New York Families, call Reachout at 265-2422. Youth Empowerment Alliance (YEA) is a group for LGBT high school students. The group will begin meeting in the fall of 2003 as a support group for LGBT teens facilitated by adults. To contact the Youth Empowerment Alliance, call Reachout at 265-2422. SUNY CANTON Common Ground: The Gay-Straight Alliance provides ongoing social, educational, and support services to gay students and their straight allies. Its mission is to support the local LGBT community and educate the Clarkson community about LGBT issues. Its website address is www.clarkson.edu/clubs/coground LGBTA: SUNY Potsdam’s LGBT Student Organization, meets weekly. The group discusses a wide range of topics, including college life and dealing with parents. Through various activities such as movie nights and the day of silence, the group members become a strong community and hopefully make friends that will last a lifetime.
